Welcome back to my blog! I am really excited to share my first headband pattern with you today! This is my “Picnic Headband” named after the traditional picnic blanket gingham design. Gingham is a fun pattern using 3 different colors to create a unique and cute design and I will walk you exactly through how to create it with this free pattern!
The design is great if you are new to color changing since it it quite simple but still interesting enough to keep seasoned crocheters engaged. It works up quickly with minimal yarn, making it great for last-minute gifts, market prep, or busting through your stash. You can keep it classic with the gingham or you can even use a solid color, or mix things up with stripes, it’s so easy to customize!

This pattern is made to fit an adult but you can easily make it as big or small as you want. I made mine with superfine cotton to keep it breezy for summer, but any yarn will work! Keep scrolling for the complete written pattern and video link!

Materials
- Yarn – any yarn! I used about 15 g total of super fine weight (1) Hobbii Rainbow Cotton in 3 colors
- Hook – 3.5 mm (I use these!)
- Tapestry needle – to weave in the ends
- Scissors – to cut your yarn
- Stitch Markers
- Measuring Tape
Gauge
18 st x 11 rows of dc = 4” x 4” (10 x 10 cm)
**Gauge is not crucial to this pattern if you are using made-to-measure method. Don’t stress over it!
Abbreviations
Sl st = Slip Stitch
Ch = Chain
Sc = Single Crochet
Dc = Double Crochet
St = Stitch

Important Pattern Notes
- This pattern uses US crochet terms.
- Turning chain does not count as a stitch.
- This pattern is size graded, however you can make-to-measure also & use any yarn/hook you like.
- This headband is for a gingham pattern, however you can play with the colors and customize it to your liking!

Measurements
This pattern is one size and will fit adults. It measures about 40 inches (14 inches for main headband and 13 inches per tie). You can also easily adjust the size by increasing/decreasing the amount of repeat rows and starting chains.
How to Change Color
This pattern involves changing colors every 3 stitches and at the beginning of a new row. Keep carried colors all on the same side, this will be the “wrong side.” I also recommended working over the carried yarns, (this is easier and cleaner than cutting and reattaching each time).
While you are finishing your last stitch of the first color, pick up the next color and pull through the last loops of your stitch. For example, for a dc you will yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull through the stitch, yarn over, pull through 2 loop a, yarn over with the new color and pull through the last 2 loops.

At the end of your row, you will change colors the same way so you can use your new color for the turning chain.

You can see how I change colors in my FREE video tutorial!
Let’s get started!
Written Pattern
Row 1: With brown, ch 69 + 2 or until your chain is 14 inches in a multiple of 3 + 2. Dc in 3rd ch from hook and in next 2 ch. *Switch color to cream, dc 3. Switch back to brown and dc 3. Repeat from * to the end. When finishing the last stitch, change color to cream, ch 2 and turn. Fasten off brown yarn.

Row 2: Dc 3. *Switch color to white, dc 3. Switch back to cream and dc 3. Repeat from * to the end. When finishing the last stitch, change color to brown, ch 2 and turn. Fasten off white yarn.

Row 3: Dc 3. *Switch color to cream, dc 3. Switch back to brown and dc 3. Repeat from * to the end. When finishing the last stitch, change color to cream, ch 2 and turn. Fasten off brown yarn.

Row 4 – 5: Repeat round 2 and 3.

Now you will crochet a sc border around the whole piece. Work 2 sc into each sideways dc as shown below. It should look like this once you are done. Do not fasten off yarn.

Ties
Row 1: Ch 2, then make a dc decrease in the first 2 stitches, dc until you have 2 stitches left, then dc decrease in the last 2 stitches.

Row 2: Ch 2 and turn. Make a dc decrease in the first 2 stitches, dc 4, then dc decrease in the last 2 stitches.
Row 3: Ch 2 and turn. Make a dc decrease in the first 2 stitches, dc 2, then dc decrease in the last 2 stitches.
Row 4: Ch 2 and turn. Make a dc decrease in the first 2 stitches, then dc decrease in the last 2 stitches.
Row 5: Ch 2 and turn. Make a dc decrease. Ch 50, then sl st in each chain until you are back at the starting point and fasten off yarn.

Attach your yarn to the other side and repeat to make the other strap.
Weave in all ends and…
You’re all done!
