How to Crochet a Tree Skirt: Granny’s Tree Skirt FREE PATTERN

Welcome back to my blog! I am so excited to share this super easy and simple Granny’s Tree Skirt pattern! This tree skirt is the perfect crochet touch to add to your holiday decor. It is VERY beginner friendly, and great to work on while watching those favorite Christmas movies!

This tree skirt is made up of the “granny stitch” which are just clusters of 3 double crochet stitches. I love this stitch so much because it really embodies what crochet is all about. Plus the color possibilities are endless! I used a color changing yarn for mine, but you can totally make it solid or striped too!

I had an amazing group of crocheters help me test out this pattern, they were so kind to work quickly so I would be able to share this with you before Christmas! <3

This pattern is size graded to fit a regular large sized Christmas tree, but its easily adjustable so you could ultimately use any yarn & hook that you want and create any size that you want! It is up to you! Keep scrolling for the complete written pattern!

  • Turning chain counts as a stitch.
  • Cluster means to work 3 dc into the same space, also known as a granny stitch
  • Increase means you will work 2 granny clusters into the same space, make sure you ch 1 between each cluster
  • Always chain 1 between each cluster
  • If your skirt is not laying flat, size up your hook

Measurements

4″ diameter for the inside opening

46″ diameter for the tree skirt

Special Stitches

This pattern uses Picot which is simply 3 chains and a slip stitch.

Picot: chain 3 and then insert hook into the third chain from hook and make a slip stitch. This creates a cluster of chains on top of your work.

Let’s get started!

Pattern

Round 1: ch 27, dc 2 in 4th ch from hook (counts as first granny cluster), repeat [ch 1, sk 1, dc 3 into the next ch] 11 times then ch 1 and dc into the last ch. (12 clusters total)

Round 2: ch 3 and turn, dc 2 in the ch sp (counts as first granny cluster here and through out the pattern), repeat [ch 1, dc 3 in to the next sp] 11 times then ch 1 and dc into the last st. (12 clusters total)

The pattern will now refer to “clusters” which is 3 dc stitches in the same sp, and “increase” which means to add 2 clusters into the same sp. Always ch 1 between clusters and always work the clusters in the spaces.

Do not fasten off yarn unless you want to change colors. Move on to the border & buttons.

Border & Buttons

Row 1: work up the side opening of your tree skirt now. Sc evenly up the raw edges of your stitches. Work 2 sc into the side of each double crochet. (70)

Row 2: ch 1 and turn, sc in each stitch. (70)

Row 3: ch 1 and turn, sc 2, ch 2 + sk 2 stitches, repeat [sc 14, ch 2 + sk 2 stitches] 4 more times, sc 2. Optional: if you don’t want to add buttons, just sc across without chaining and skipping stitches. You can add ties on each side at the end and make a bow, add velcro, or leave it open! (70)

Row 4: ch 1 and turn, sc in each stitch and in each ch evenly across. (70)

Now you should be back at the outside of your tree skirt. You will now make a picot border working along the outside.

Border: Repeat [sc 3, picot] all the way around. Sc to the end if needed.

Now you will work up the other side opening of your tree skirt.

Row 1: Sc evenly up the raw edges of your stitches. Work 2 sc into the side of each double crochet. (70)

Row 2: ch 1 and turn, sc in each stitch. (70)

Row 3: ch 1 and turn, sc in each stitch. (70)

Row 4: ch 1 and turn, sc in each stitch. (70) Fasten off yarn.

Optional: You can work a sc border along the inside of your tree skirt too!

Sew your 5 buttons on. Your tree skirt can lay either way so choose which side you like better and make sure the buttons are sewn on that side.

Your buttons should be placed on the solid edge side between rows 2 & 3. Start from one side and skip 2 stitches, then sew your button on between the next 2. Repeat [skip 14 stitches, then sew your button on between the next 2] to the end.

Weave in all ends and…

You’re all done!
