Easy Cozy Ribbed Bonnet: Free Crochet Pattern in 8 Sizes from Newborn to Large Adult

Hello and welcome back to my blog! Today I am sharing with you my FREE pattern for my Cozy Ribbed Bonnet that comes in 8 sizes ranging from Newborn to Large Adult. I made a toddler size for my 2 year old daughter, newborn size for my soon to be born son, and an adult small for myself of course! I can’t wait to all wear them together <3

This bonnet is made in one continuous strand which I LOVE. It uses basic stitches with a few modified double crochets that work around the posts instead of through the loops. It is a lot easier that it sounds and I will walk you through how to do them step-by-step! I made each of the bonnets within 30 min – 2 hours so this would make a great gift or market make.

I had an amazing group of crocheters help me test out this pattern – take a look at all of their creations and color combos on my Instagram or in the inexpensive ad-free PDF <3

This pattern is size graded and I have quite tight tension, so if you have trouble meeting the gauge or your yarn choice is a higher weight than mine, I recommend making a size down or using a smaller hook! You can easily add additional ribbing rows if you need at the end so you should always be able to finish with a bonnet that you LOVE.

Special Stitches

This pattern uses Front Post Double Crochet and Back Post Double Crochet, which is a double crochet worked around the “post” of the stitch, instead of in the “v”.

Front Post Double Crochet (Fpdc): Yarn over, insert your hook from the front of your work, around the post of the stitch from the previous row and back out the front, then finish the double crochet as normal.

Back Post Double Crochet (Bpdc): Yarn over, insert your hook from the back of your work, around the post of the stitch from the previous row and back out the back, then finish the double crochet as normal.

Let’s get started!

Pattern – Part 1

Round 3: ch 2, repeat [dc in the first stitch, inc in the next] around, sl st (30)

Round 4: ch 2, repeat [dc in the first 2 stitches, inc in the next] around, sl st (40)

Round 11: ch 2, repeat [dc in the first 9 stitches, inc in the next] around, sl st (110) Stop here for Large Adult.

If you want to make an even bigger bonnet, continue doing more rounds and doing an increase after one additional stitch each round (dc in 10, inc in next), (dc in 11, inc in next), etc…

Pattern – Part 2

Row 1: ch 2, dc in each st leaving the following amount of stitches unworked for your size

  • 5 sts unworked for size Newborn
  • 7 sts unworked for sizes 0-3mo, 3-6mo, 6-12m, and toddler
  • 9 sts unworked for sizes child, teen/sm adult, and large adult.

Row 2: ch 2 and turn, dc in each worked stitch

Repeat Row 2 until you reach the row count for your size, then move onto Part 3. See chart for stitch counts and row counts for each size.

Pattern – Part 3

Now you will work the ribbing rows around the face opening using fpdc and bpdc. You will want to make sure the posts are worked on the “right side”, although you can always flip your bonnet inside out if you need.

For sizes 0-3m, 3-6m, 6-12m, Toddler, & Child .

Row 1: ch 2 and turn (reminder that turning ch does not count as a stitch, repeat [dc, fpdc] around, dc in the last st.

Row 2: ch 2, and turn, repeat [dc, bpdc] around, dc in the last st.

Row 3: Repeat Row 1.

For a larger brim, continue repeating rows 2 and 3 to your desired length.

Row 3: Repeat Row 1.

For a larger brim, continue repeating rows 2 and 3 to your desired length.

Pattern – Part 4

Now you will work a sc border around the entire bonnet while also creating the ties as you go.

You should have ended in the bottom corner of the face opening of your bonnet. Chain the amount listed for each size (or however long you want the ties to be), then sc back in each ch to return to the bonnet. Sc in each stitch all the way around until you get to the opposite corner of the face opening and create another tie the same way. Finish sc around until you get back to where you began and fasten off yarn.

Weave in all ends and…

You’re all done!
