What I made in June 2024 as a crochet designer!
It is officially the end of my 1st month as an Etsy seller & I am here to spill the tea on EVERYTHING! I started this blog to share my crochet designs for free which has been so fun for me. Being able to create and express myself through my designs is so fun and I love seeing you guys enjoy these patterns even more!
However, running a blog does come with its costs! Such as purchasing a domain, website hosting, different fees and software subscriptions. I won’t get into all of that now, but if enough of you are interested I might write up a post at the end of the year with all of my yearly revenues and expenses!
When I am not crocheting, and not taking care of my 9 month old, I am also working part time as a CPA (certified public accountant). I have my own firm focusing in tax. So I really do enjoy looking at the numbers of a business and analyzing the profit & loss. Now that I have this blog, I sort of picked up another side hustle with it. What started out as a hobby quickly became an additional revenue stream for me and my family.
I have always loved being able to see behind the scenes of different businesses and so that’s why I thought it would be fun to share that with anyone interested.
There are a few different ways I have set up monetization of this blog. So let’s break it down.
The first and most obvious way to monetize a blog is by running ads. I had my website qualify to run ads towards the end of June so I only had about a weeks worth of earnings. From the ads, I made …. $0.73!! It’s not much at all but I hope that it can grow as I build out my blog more. Maybe one day I’ll have enough to buy a skein of yarn with it.
The second way is through affiliate links. I signed up to have an affiliate account through Amazon. Basically what this is, is I can post trackable links to products on Amazon on my blog, and if someone clicks my links and purchases that product, Amazon will give me a small commission.
I don’t really push a lot of products on my blog since I am mainly posting patterns, but I will add my yarn and hooks here. From the Amazon affiliate program, I made …. $0! Haha. I am really not surprised by this because if you are searching for crochet patterns, you most likely already have your supplies. And if you are anything like me, you have closets full of yarn already. 🙂
The last way I have monetized my crochet blog has been the most successful part for me by far. I became an Etsy seller where I sell digital PDF’s of my patterns that are ad free. I had low expectations for this platform since I started with really no following, a brand new shop with no sales, no reviews, nothing. From Etsy sales, I made … $51.35! Just as a disclaimer, Etsy does have fees for sellers so my profit is a somewhat less than that. But still! It is crazy that I was able to make any sales at all!
I also sell my finished products and do custom orders but I did not have any sales in the month of June. I haven’t made this a huge focus for myself yet. My plan is to add a section onto my Etsy for ready-to-ship products to start doing craft shows soon. I am still working out the kinks for this but hopefully I can start bringing in some revenue and making some more room for new projects soon 🙂
Overall, I had $52.08 in revenue for the month of June! I totally spent way more than that yarn shopping haha but at least it can help out a little and hopefully grow each month. We shall see! Stay tuned for more.. and if you have any questions please drop them in a comment below.
Happy crocheting!
