Viral Patchwork Crochet Halloween Cardigan | Free Pattern

🧶🦣 Welcome! 🦣🧶

I am so excited to share my Patchwork Halloween Cardigan with you!! Ever since I created this, I have received endless questions and so much love for it. This is definitely my most viral creation to date so it is about time that I put the pattern into writing so anyone can create one!

A little back story about this cardigan. I began creating it in July of 2023, while I was 6 months pregnant. I knew that it was going to take some time and I wanted to get it done before Halloween so I started early. I got about halfway done with the squares and developed prenatal carpal tunnel.. ugh!!

I didn’t even know it was a thing. But I had to quit crocheting.

Luckily it went away after I delivered at the end of September. I somehow managed to finish the cardigan before Halloween all while recovering and taking care of my newborn. I got to wear it while passing out candy and I got so many compliments! <3

This sweater is created using a variety of different granny squares all sewn together. I then added the sleeves using the granny stitch, (3 dc clusters), in a striped pattern. To finish, I added ribbing around the edges and the wrists.

I created a total of 45 5×5 inch granny squares. It created a nice oversized cardigan for me and I am usually a size M/L.

Most of the granny squares I used were free patterns that I have linked for you here on this post! Some of them were free-handed, and some are tapestry style. I will do my best to share how I made those with you.

The best part of this pattern is that you can really make any squares you want with any colors you want and it will come out sooo cute. For a smaller cardigan or a cropped style, you can use less squares. For a larger cardigan, or if you wanted to use squares on the sleeves, you can create more squares.

I used 10 colors of “I Love This Yarn” by Hobby Lobby. I limited myself to using 9 of those colors to create all of the squares and sleeves, and 1 for the ribbing. I stuck to that palette since I wanted it to be somewhat cohesive even with the chaos of the different squares.

Since these squares come from several different sources, you might need to play with the pattern to get the squares to be an equal size. Blocking is going to be essential! I got this Blocking Board from Amazon for this project & I have been using it for all of my projects ever since.

If you want to check out my TikTok series where I created this cardigan by making 1 granny square a day, you can find it here!

Now let’s get started!

I will be sharing the patterns I used for my squares, and I am working on updating this post to share the square I created along with each pattern so you can get an idea of what I did for my cardigan! <3

Putting Them Together

Thats it! Remember I made 2 spiral squares, and 2 classic granny squares, so that is 45 squares total!

Once you are done with your squares, lay them out how you want and start sewing them together. If you aren’t familiar with granny square cardigans, look up “Granny Square Cardigan Diagram” on google for reference.

Layout

I had 2 panels of 2×5 squares for the front and a panel of 5×5 squares on the back. Attach your squares making sure that they are all facing the right way. For the arm holes, I sewed up the sides and left 2 squares length open to attach sleeves. I did a granny stitch down the arm with some decreases to get it tapered off. I did sc blo for ribbing. Watch my TikTok video below to see how I did the decreases. 🙂

@woolymamacrochet

Replying to @Cortney Wente How i did the sleeves!! I used a granny stitch with a few decreases. I did not have it in me to make more squares for the sleeves but i kept the vibe by doing the stripes! Let me know what you think & if you have any other questions!! ❤️ I appreciate all the love i get on this cardigan, it was so fun to make and i learned sooo much about crochet while working on this #crochetpatchworkcardigan #halloweencardigan #patchworkcardigan #grannysquarecardigan #crochet
