🧶🦣 Welcome! 🦣🧶
Today I am sharing with you this stunning yet easy to create top! I called this the “Coco Summer Crop Top” because the colors and design gave me rich girl vibes, like Coco Chanel. I love this top for summer, because usually clothing made with yarn can get quite hot. However the little spaces in the squares make this top very airy so I feel totally comfortable wearing this in the Las Vegas heat where I’m from.
This top is constructed using basic crochet stitches. Don’t be intimidated by the design! If you can single crochet, double crochet, and chain, then you will be able to create this top! That makes this pattern a great project for a beginner.
I designed this pattern to be customizable to fit you. There are instructions for a “made to measure” top where the top will fit your exact measurements, or I have also included instructions for standard women’s sizing that you can use if you wish.
Each square and cup is constructed separately, and then stitched together. This pattern will guide you step by step, and once you get the hang of the pattern you will breeze through it!
This pattern was tested by crocheters in all sizes! They were so amazing and generous to share pictures of their finished product with me, so I can share with you too! I love seeing the different color combinations that everyone chose. Scroll through and take a look for some inspo! <3
You may sell the finished product as long as I am credited for the pattern. Do not copy and publish this pattern as your own.

Materials
- YARN | You can use ANY yarn you like! For a top that looks closest to mine, use an acrylic or cotton yarn worsted weight 4. If you choose a smaller yarn you will need to add additional rows to bring to size. I used worsted weight Black & Cream, you will need 2-3 skeins of each color depending on your size
- 5 mm hook (size H) or whatever hook fits your choice of yarn
- tapestry needle to weave in the ends
- scissors to cut your yarn
- stitch markers
Sizing
This pattern is size XS-4XL, or an option for custom sizing so it fits perfect to your own measurements! If between sizes, go with chest measurement, or size down.
XS | S | M | L | XL | 2X | 3X | 4X | |
Chest (inches) | 28-30 | 32-34 | 36-38 | 40-42 | 44-46 | 48-50 | 52-54 | 56-58 |
Waist (inches | 23-24 | 25-26 1/2 | 28-30 | 32-34 | 36-38 | 40-42 | 44-45 | 46-47 |
The band is made up of squares stitched together. For size XS-M the pattern calls for 5 squares (4×4 inch squares). For sizes L-2XL create 6 squares (5×5 inch squares). For sizes 3XL- 4XL, create 6 squares (6.5×6.5 in squares). We will go over this in the pattern, but just as a heads up on the sizing! 🙂
Abbreviations
Sl st = Slip Stitch
Ch = Chain
Sc = single crochet
DC = Double crochet
Pattern Notes
- This pattern uses US crochet terms
- You can also make this top in a solid color or you can add more colors. For this pattern, I used 2 colors
- I used 2 different colors of yarn (Colors A and B). My top is made with (A)Black and (B)Cream. You can make this top in a solid color or add more colors!
- TIP: carry the color change yarn as you create the granny square if you wish. It will not be as “clean” of a look since the color might be able to pop out more, but you will have less ends to weave in. For a more polished look, fasten off after each color change.
Let’s get started!
Make Squares
To Start: Grab Color A and create a magic circle OR chain 4 and join to the first chain made with a slip stitch to form a ring
Round 1: Chain 3 (counts as dc), work 2 more dc into ring *ch 3, work 3 dc into ring. Repeat from * two more times, ch 3, then join with a slip stitch into 3rd chain of the beginning chain 3. You should have 4 “clusters” and 4 ch 3 spaces as the corners.
Round 2: Join Color B by making a slip knot on hook, then place the hook into any chain 3 space from first round. Draw up a loop, yarn over and pull through both loops. Chain 2 more (counts as a dc), then work 2 dc in same space. *Chain 1, [3 dc, 3 ch, 3 dc] into next chain 3 space. Repeat from * two more times then ch 1, 3 dc in same space as beginning cluster, ch 3 and join with slip stitch into 3rd chain of beginning chain 3.
Round 3: Grab color A and join as done previously in Round 2, then make 2 more dc in same chain 3 space to make a cluster. *Chain 1, 3 dc in next ch 1 space, ch 1 [3 dc, 3 ch, 3 dc] in next chain 3 space. Repeat from *two more times, then ch 1, 3 dc into next chain 1 space, ch 1, 3 dc in same space as beginning cluster, ch 3 and join with a slip stitch into 3rd chain of beginning chain 3.
Round 4: Grab color B and join as done previously, then make 2 more dc in same chain 3 space to make a cluster. *Chain 1, 3 dc in next ch 1 spaces, ch 1 [3 dc, 3 ch, 3 dc] in next chain 3 space. Repeat from *two more times, then ch 1, 3 dc into next chain 1 space, ch 1, 3 dc in same space as beginning cluster, ch 3 and join with a slip stitch into 3rd chain of beginning chain 3.
For size XS-M repeat 4 times to create 5 squares. (4×4 inch squares)
For sizes L-2XL repeat 5 times to create 6 squares. (5×5 inch squares)
For sizes 3XL- 4XL, complete 1 more round on your granny square. Follow the pattern in Round 4, by working 3 dc in the ch1 spaces on sides and [3dc, ch 3, 3dc] in the corners. Work a ch1 in between the dc clusters on the sides repeat 5 times to create 6 squares. (6.5×6.5 in squares)
We will add a SC border around these squares in a later step during our finishing rows 🙂
Connecting Your Squares
There are several ways to connect your squares! For this pattern, I chose to do a simple Sc on the “wrong side” to give it a stitched together look. I will guide you on how to accomplish this!
Lay out your squares in a line. Grab 2 squares and sandwich them together with the “right side” facing each other. The “wrong sides” should be on the outside where you can see it.
Connecting Row: Grab color A. Slip knot the yarn onto your hook. Locate the corners of the square where the Ch 3 is. Insert your hook into the middle Ch of the Ch 3 on each square, yarn over and pull through both loops. Sc into the same stitch. Insert your hook into the next Ch in both squares and work a Sc. You will continue down this row, working a Sc through both squares stitches all the way across. Finish with your last stitch in the middle ch of the Ch 3 space on the corner and tie off yarn.
Grab another square and sandwich them together making sure the “right sides” are facing each other. Repeat the Connecting Row until all of your squares are connected and form a line.
Make Cups
Since every body is unique and comes in all shapes and sizes, I’ve designed this pattern to be customizable to fit you specifically! I also have recommendations of standard sizing measurements if you’d rather use that instead of custom sizing.
To begin: With Color A, create a foundation chain that extends from the bottom of your breast to the middle. Or use this standard sizing chart below
XS: ch 11 XL: ch 15
S: ch 12 2X: ch 16
M: ch 13 3X: ch 17
L: ch 14 4x: ch 18
Row 1: Sc 1 in the 2nd Ch from hook, Sc in each stitch until you reach the last Ch. Sc 3 into the last Ch. (Optional – place a stitch marker in the 2nd Sc of the Sc 3. This will mark the middle stitch where you will increase each row.)
Work along the opposite side of the chain, Sc 1 in each ch. You should end this row with the same number of stitches on either side of the marked stitch, not including the marked stitch.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. This turning chain does not count as a stitch. Sc in each stitch across until you reach the 2nd Sc of the Sc 3 on the row before (your marked stitch.) Sc 3 in this stitch. Move the stitch marker to the 2nd Sc of the new Sc 3. Continue to Sc in each remaining stitch of the previous row.
At the end of each row, you should always have the same number of stitches on either side of your marker without counting the marked stitch.
Row 3+: Repeat Row 2 until the cup covers your breast. Note that you will add 2 more rows with the border color, Color B, in a later step. For those using the standard sizing, see the below chart for the numbers of additional rows to complete now with Color A.
XS: 8 rows (10 total) XL: 16 rows (18 total)
S: 10 rows (12 total) 2X: 18 rows (20 total)
M: 12 rows (14 total) 3X: 20 rows (22 total)
L: 14 rows (16 total) 4x: 22 rows (24 total)
Repeat steps above to create another cup so you have 2.
Border Row: Lay your cups down so they are facing the same way. It doesn’t matter which side you choose. Grab color B and join by making a slip knot on your hook and inserting into the 1st Sc on the bottom right side corner of your cup. Draw up a loop, yarn over, and pull through both loops. Sc into the same stitch.
Border Row 2: Ch 1 and turn. The turning ch does not count as a stitch.
Repeat on the other cup. Leave a long tail when you tie off your yarn on your second cup. Take this tail and your tapestry needle to sew your cups together by weaving in through the back loop of the opposite stitches on each cup. I ended up weaving in and out through 3 of the Sc stitches on each side to connect my cups. I have found that this gives me better support!
Finishing Row
Now that your cups and granny square band are finished, it is time to connect them! Grab your stitch markers!!
Finishing Row 1: Start by grabbing your cups, “right side” facing you and triangles pointed down. Attach color A to the right side and Sc into the same stitch. Sc across the bottom of the cup in each stitch and end of row, Sc in each stitch and end of row of the border colors, and then across the second cup. You should have the same number of Sc on the bottom of both cups. Don’t cut the yarn.
Now you will center the cups onto your granny square band. To do this, count how many Sc you made from the edge of the cup to the center. Reminder that these should be the same on each side. Then count that same number of stitches across the top of your granny square band, starting from the middle (size XS-M the middle of square 3, size L-4XL the join between squares 3 & 4) See the photos for reference. Add a stitch marker on that stitch. Repeat for the other side.
Finishing Row 2: Using the same working yarn you will now turn your work so the “wrong side” of the cups are facing you. Sandwich the cups with the band, “right sides” facing each other and insert your hook into the first Sc of your cup and the marked stitch of your band, and work a Sc. This is just like how you joined your squares earlier. Sc across each stitch working your hook through both the cups and the squares until you reach your next stitch marker. This should have completely connected your cups to the center of your band.
Continue working a Sc into each stitch of the granny square band until you reach the Ch 3 space on the corner. Sc 3 into the Ch 3 space. Continue working a Sc in each stitch all the way back to where you started while Sc 3 in each of the corner Ch 3 spaces. Slip st and tie off yarn.
Finishing Row 3: Grab Color B and attach to the left edge where the cup meets the granny square band. Sc in each stitch across. When you get to the corners, Sc 2 into the 2nd Sc of the Sc 3 from the previous row. Continue until you get the right edge where the cup meets the granny square band, slip stitch and tie off.
Weave in all of your ends.
Straps
We will make 2 straps that attach at the neck, and criss cross across the back like a corset.
Grab color B. Ch 150. Sc in the second ch from hook. Sc in each ch across until you reach the end. Slip stitch into the top of the cup triangle. Cut yarn and tie off. Take the beginning tail and sew that onto the top of the cup. Tie your 2 tails in a knot and weave in your ends making sure the strap is secure.
Repeat for the other side.
Now you can weave your straps into the band like a corset.
…and you’re done!
