Heart Bucket Hat: Free Crochet Pattern

Welcome to Wooly Mama Crochet! Today I am soo excited to release my Heart Bucket Hat pattern! I had so much fun designing these heart squares and seaming them together to make this hat that I can wear around Valentine’s Day.

This pattern includes my new Heart Granny Square design and instructions on how to seam them together and create the brim which makes the bucket hat. You could also just use the Heart Granny Squares for any other project that calls for squares too! This free pattern could be used however your heart desires. 😉

I have included a stitch chart for the Heart Squares for those that prefer to use them. I personally LOVE stitch charts because I am such a visual person. I like being able to see exactly where my stitches go and use it as an extra tool to follow along with while I am reading the written pattern. If you haven’t used a stitch chart before, I challenge you to try and follow along with this pattern! It’s never a bad idea to try and learn new skills. <3

I also created a FREE video tutorial on how to create the Heart Granny Squares that you can find here, on my Youtube Channel! Please leave a comment and subscribe to my channel if you haven’t already 🙂 I appreciate you!

Please do not copy, redistribute, or resell this pattern in any way, including creating a video tutorial. You may sell your finished piece but please credit me as the pattern designer.

If you share your piece on social media, please credit me as the pattern designer. I would love if you tag me!! I really enjoy seeing your beautiful work and I’d love to share it on my page.

Measurements

This pattern is one size and will fit most adults. 😁 The finished size of this hat using my gauge is 23 inch head circumference and 9 inches from the top to the bottom of the brim. Using a larger hook might help you meet the gauge if you are a tight crocheter.

Gauge

1 completed square should measure about 5.5 square inches

Materials

  • Yarn – weight 4 acrylic yarn in 3 colors (50 g light pink, 50 g dark pink, 50 g white) you will have leftover yarn of each color
  • Hook4 mm or similar to achieve gauge
  • Tapestry needle – to weave in the ends
  • Scissorsto cut your yarn
  • Stitch Markers
  • Blocking Board – optional but I HIGHLY recommend blocking your squares

Abbreviations

Sl st = Slip Stitch

Ch = Chain

Sc = Single Crochet

Hdc = Half Double Crochet

Dc = Double Crochet

Tr = Treble Crochet

St = Stitch

Sp = Space

Important Pattern Notes

  • This pattern uses US crochet terms.
  • [] Work the pattern in brackets all in the same stitch.
  • Have fun experimenting with different colors!
  • The number in () parentheses at the end of each round is the stitch count
  • Increase means to add 2 stitches into the same stitch.
  • Dc2tog is essentially a decrease, making a double crochet from two stitches

Let’s get started!

Stitch Chart for Heart Square

The stitch chart is a visual representation of the written instructions. If you can’t read the stitch chart, don’t worry, follow the written directions and you will get the correct result. This is just added for people who prefer stitch charts. 🙂

Heart Square

Make 5. If you want to follow along with my FREE video tutorial, the link to my Youtube is here!

Round 1: With light pink, make a magic circle, ch 2 (doesn’t count as stitch), then dc 13 into the magic circle. Sl st to the first dc (13)

Joining

Lay out your five squares like the photo below and seam them together. I used dark pink to seam. You are welcome to join in any way you prefer. I sewed mine in the blo.

Put the “right sides” of your squares together, so you are working along the “wrong side” and sew into the back loops only of both squares using your needle. Start & stop in the middle sc of each corner.

Tip: Sew through the first and last stitch twice to make it more secure.

Brim

Round 1: With dark pink, attach your yarn to a join on the brim of the hat working on the “right side”. [Ch 3 and 2 dc in the same space]. Sk 2, [3 dc], sk 2, [3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc], sk 2, [3 dc], sk 2, [3 dc], sk 2, [3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc], sk 2, [3 dc], then [3 dc] at the next join. Note: you might be off count a stitch or two depending on how you joined your squares so just try to keep it as even as you can 🙂

Sk 2, [3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc], sk 2, [3 dc], sk 2, [3 dc], sk 2, [3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc], sk 2, [3 dc], sk 2, [3 dc].

Skip the join and skip 1 st, [3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc], sk 2, [3 dc], sk 2, [3 dc], sk 2, [3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc], sk 2, [3 dc], sk 2, [3 dc], then at the next join [3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc].

Sk 2, [3 dc], sk 2, [3 dc], sk 2, [3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc], sk 2, [3 dc], sk 2, [3 dc], sk 2, [3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc]. Sl st to the top of your chain 3 and fasten off.

Round 2: Attach light pink to any space between the 3 dc clusters. [Ch 3 and 2 dc in the same space]. *Ch 1 and then [3 dc] in the next space. Repeat from * all the way around. Ch 1 and sl st to the top of the ch 3 and fasten off.

Round 3: Attach dark pink to any space. [Ch 3 and 2 dc in the same space]. *Ch 1 and [3 dc] in the next space. Repeat from * one more time, then ch 1 and [3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc] all in the next space. Work this pattern of 3 dc clusters then a cluster increase all the way around working in the spaces with a ch 1 between each 3 dc cluster. Ch 1 and sl st to the top of the chain 3 and fasten off.

Weave in all ends and then …

You’re all done!
